Lactoferrin

Lactoferrin is a multifunctional glycoprotein of the iron-binding transferrin family. It is found in saliva, tears and other exocrine fluids, but it is mainly produced by the mammary gland of mammals and we find it especially in colostrum, or the yellowish secretion of the first days of breastfeeding, in which the essential nutrients for immune defenses of the newborn.

Its ability to influence various biological reactions, its immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory and contrast activity against a broad spectrum of pathogenic microorganisms, including respiratory viruses, have made it a protein of wide interest in research and in food supplementation.

Colostrum

Bovine colostrum contains very high amounts of over one hundred bioactive factors such as immunoglobulins, anti-inflammatory factors, antimicrobial factors and growth factors.

The bioactive factors are contained in a complex but important matrix together with high levels of other nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, lipids, carbohydrates and proteins. Due to the complex content, bovine colostrum could be considered a kind of "super nutrient".

Immunoglobulins Immunoglobulins are an important part of the adaptive immune system, which relies on 'memory' to respond quickly to threats it has previously been subjected to.

Immunoglobulins in bovine colostrum come in five different varieties called isotypes:

IgG comes in four forms, is the major component of immunity against invading enteric pathogens, and forms the core of secondary immunity

IgA protects the intestinal epithelium from enteric pathogens and toxins

IgD activates specific types of white blood cells to produce antimicrobial factors

IgE is involved in allergies, as it binds to allergens and triggers histamine release from specific white blood cells, but may also protect against enteric pathogens, such as parasitic worms

IgM is involved in clearing enteric pathogens until sufficient amounts of IgG are present and is associated with the primary immune response

Immunoregulatory and anti-inflammatory factors The content of bovine colostrum belongs to both the innate and adaptive immune systems.

Immunoglobulins are the major component of the adaptive immune system, but bovine colostrum contains a wide range of other immune regulatory factors. A wide variety of components related to the innate immune system have been identified in bovine colostrum, such as maternal leukocytes, oligosaccharides, gangliosides, proteins, peptides and cytokines that regulate the development and expression of a wide range of immune responses.

Growth Factors Bovine colostrum contains various growth factors which particularly stimulate the growth and development of the intestine, such as insulin-like growth factors, epidermal growth factors, transforming growth factors and platelet-derived growth factors.

Antimicrobial Factors Bovine colostrum contains several bioactive factors such as lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase, lysozyme which possess antimicrobial activity, help protect against enteric pathogens, provide passive immunity and protect against infection.

Nutrients Bovine colostrum contains the same basic nutrients as mature milk, but in significantly higher concentrations such as proteins, peptides, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, minerals and ash.
