Amber in History

Amber is the fossil resin of Pinites succinifer (often referred to as Pinus succinifera), a conifer that lived in the tertiary period (from 70 to 2 million years ago) and became extinct 40 million years ago.

The color varies from deep red to orange, to light yellow, to dark brown, to milky, although rare greenish and blackish colors are known due to the presence of organic substances fossilized with the resin.

Amber contains from 3 to 8% of succinic acid: the healing properties of amber are attributed to this substance.

In fact, amber, in contact with the skin, releases very small quantities of succinic acid, which acts as a biostimulant: it regulates the nervous system, is an anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antitoxic agent and stimulates the healing processes.

Over the centuries, there have been many testimonies of the healing properties of amber: already in 1534 the Polish doctor and botanist Stefan Falimirz mentions its healing properties in his book ''On herbs and their properties" and in 1833 Jan Freyer, author of the first monograph on amber, mentions its uses as an anti-inflammatory, pain reliever, antispasmodic.

The healing properties of amber are also confirmed by research carried out in 2002 by Dr. Nikolai Moshkov of Kaliningrad who effectively used amber for pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory treatments both with local applications and with amber tinctures taken orally.

Already at the beginning of the 20th century, amber was used in Northern European countries as a remedy to soothe the pain of milk teeth coming out in children.
