The copper content in the adult human body is around 70-80 mg of which 40% in the muscles, 15% in the liver, 10% in the brain, 10% in the blood and the remainder in the heart and kidneys. The absorption of copper from food takes place in the small intestine, through a metallothionein; the absorbed quota is estimated between 35 and 70%. Absorption is favored in acidic pH conditions, and is inhibited by phytates, calcium, ascorbic acid and other trace elements, in particular zinc, whose metabolism is closely linked to that of copper. Copper is transported in the circulation for the most part bound to ceruloplasmin (90-95%): the normal plasma concentration is about 100 µg/dl. Ceruloplasmin participates in the oxidation of numerous substrates including adrenaline, serotonin, ascorbate, Fe2+ (oxidized to Fe3+) and Mn2+ (oxidized to Mn3+).
